MANSEL(MIKE) DEVERELL

Like other young men, Mansel joined the Air Force in 1942 and was sent to Saskatchewan for training. When he joined the Air Force, no one realized how serious the war was. During his training the war escalated. Before he was transferred to England, he came home on leave for Christmas of 1942. He remarked to a friend, “Next year at this time, I’ll be six months dead.” And indeed he was. He went to England when the war was at its bleakest. He was shot down over the North Sea on his first flight. His body washed up on shore of The Netherlands. When two more relatives were killed within months, the families faced the reality; the war was hitting home.
