Washago Tower 1920
In 1906 the Canadian Northern Railway built the rail line from Toronto to Parry Sound passing through Brechin, Udney, Rathburn, and Washago. At Washago the Grand Trunk Railway had to be crossed just south of the middle branch of the Severn River, where the large coal chute [built by CN in 1935] still stands today, so a leverman's tower was built to control the crossing with semaphores and derails. The 1920 picture is looking north on the GTR toward Washago with the CNoR crossing beyond the tower from east to west. The crossing was removed in 1922 when the CNR aligned the Newmarket and Bala Subdivisions to cross to river together.

The approach to the swing bridges had a "de-rail" track that would flip the engine if the bridge was open and the train couldn't stop. This stopped the engine from going into the canal and causng more damage
