    • Obituary: Roger Albert Kett

      June 11, 1968 - July 7, 2012

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Roger left this life on July 7, 2012 with his two best girls at his side - his beloved wife, Peggy and his mother, Verna. Roger was a man of many talents and although his life was cut tragically short, he managed to cram more living into his 44 years than most of us do in 100 years. He was born in Wainwright, Alberta on June 11, 1968 - the first of three children born to Verna and Raleigh Kett. He spent his formative years on the farm, attending school and church, and was involved in 4-H. This is where Roger honed his public speaking skills and developed his flair for drama-both of which came in handy in his adult life. Roger received a degree in history from Camrose Lutheran College (now Augustana University) in 1990 and went on to receive a Master of Divinity degree from St. Andrew’s Theological College in 1994. His first placement was the McManwel Pastoral Charge in Manitoba from July 1994 to June 1995. Roger started his 14 year placement at the Oyen United Church July 1995 where he stayed until moving to the Red Deer Lake United Church (just south of Calgary) in July 2009. During his time in Oyen, Roger became a fixture in the community being involved in the Masonic Lodge, the Royal Canadian Legion, the New Brigden Drama Club and teaching dance to the Grade 10 high school students, to name a few. Roger’s compassion for the needs of others manifested itself in many ways including the implementation of the Oyen and District Food Bank in 1998 and his work with the Oyen Ministerial Association. Chances are, if you lived in the Oyen area during those years, Roger touched your life in one way or another. News of his passing sparked a flood of tributes on Facebook where some very touching stories and remembrances are posted. His connection to people of all ages and walks of life is quite remarkable. A funeral service was held on July 12, 2012 at the Red Deer Lake United Church in Calgary while a memorial service (featuring the same readings, hymns and eulogies) took place at the Oyen Legion. This would have made Roger dance for you since he was always adamant about making sure people were included and knew they were welcome. The interment took place in Wainwright on July 13, 2012 which was followed by another memorial service. Altogether there were over 800 people in attendance. Roger was certainly able to “draw the circle wide.” Roger will dearly missed by his beloved wife Peggy, parents Verna and Raleigh Kett of Wainwright, and sisters Roxanne (Danny) La Chance and their sons Austin and Aaron of Wainwright, Corinne (Mark) Koppel and their sons Matthew and Cameron of Strathmore. Roger’s memory will be cherished by his parents-in-law, Ruth and Don Siferd of Oyen, sister-in-law Pat Siferd (Bernie Krewski) of Edmonton, brother-in-law Tim Siferd (Kathleen Martin) of St. Adolphe, Manitoba as well as numerous other family and friends. If desired, in memory of Roger, memorial donations may be made to Red Deer Lake United Church, Site 5, Comp. 21, RR8, Calgary, Ab T2J 2Y9, Augustana Faculty University of Alberta (www.augustana.ualberta.ca), 4901, 46 Avenue, Camrose Alberta T4V 2R3, St. Andrew’s College 1121 College Drive, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7N 0W3, the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca) 200-325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5
