Joseph Walsh was a defaulter during the First World War. This was most common among Irish Catholics who did not wish to die on behalf of the British Empire. He and hid out during the day and worked in the fields at night. His friend Ed Murphy was not so lucky and served time at the Burnwash jail farm. Joe Walsh returned home when the heat was off.

He also worked as a rigger in the construction industry in the U.S., Philadelphia for example.
