      per " The History of Renville County" page 648--- in 1931 John received his B.A. degree at Minot State College, and then went to Northern Colorado at Greeley to earn his masters. He taught at Lansford for five years, serving as high school principal and coach, later as superintendent. While teaching at Lansford he married to Avis Anderson of Minot, a college classmate and teacher.
      Bernard changed careers when he was an accountant for Standard Oil, he held this position for a number of years before returning back to teaching. In 1942 he joined the teaching staff of Minot State College as chairman of the division of business education. During WWII he served as a lieutenant in the Navy. He returned back to MSC in 1946, and in 1962 became director of the extension service division. After 32 years on the faculty of MSC Bernard retired in 1974. At that time, a large fountain on the campus was dedicated in his honor.

      to this day the Minot Sate College awards the -J. BERNARD BUSSE SCHOLARSHIP
      Mr. Busse was a long-time staff member of Minot State serving as teacher, Chairman of the Business
      Department, and as the first Director of Extension. Bernard was very active and interested in athletics.
      He was a well-known game official throughout the region and was inducted into the North Dakota Hall
      of Fame which is housed at the Jamestown Civic Center.circa 1980.
