Richard Whyke Rutter was born June 20, 1862 on the Isle of St. Helena, Cape of Good Hope, where his grandfather had been stationed during the guarding of Napoleon. Richard and his brother, Charles John Rutter, left St. Helena and made their way to Draper Township in the Muskoka District of Upper Canada (now Ontario) where they married and had families.
Richard Rutter married Matilda Louise "Emma" Colley, the daughter of Edward G. and Mary J. Blackman Colley, on May 19, 1880 in Oakley Township, Muskoka District, Ontario, Canada. The couple had four children as follows:
Mary Trissellen Rutter Ball (1885-1950)
Emily "Emma" Matilda
Rutter Reinbird/Francis (1881-?)
Elizabeth L. Rutter (1885-1886)
Annie Rebecca Delores "Laura"
Rutter Edwards (1887-?)
Both Matilda Louise "Emma" Colley Rutter and their child, Elizabeth L. Rutter died in 1886 in Macauley Township, Muskoka District, Ontario, Canada. Both are buried in Fraserburg United Church Cemetery, Draper Township, Fraserburg, Ontario, Canada.
On September 23, 1889, Richard W. Rutter married Elizabeth Jane Duffy, daughter of John and Ann Morgan Fogarty Duffy, at Church of the Guardian Angels, Orillia, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. The couple went on to have four additional children as follows:

Mary Eva Rutter Murray (1894-1921)
Mary Pearl Eileen Rutter (1899-1909)
Edna Agnes Elizabeth Rutter Alexander (1900-1993)
Richard Rutter died on January 17, 1922 in Cobalt, Timiskaming County, Ontario, Canada. His remains were interred on January 20, 1922 in Silverland Cemetery, Cobalt, Timiskaming County, Ontario, Canada.
