  • Genealogical Notes
    • The death last week of George Edward Brooks closed a long and active life. In Muskoka for over 60 years, George Brooks had been a resident of Bracebridge for about 53 years. Throughout his life he was energetic and active, and even when sickness overtook him in recent years, he was determined to work whenever it was possible. During the past winter his health failed badly and death came last Monday, May 22nd. Born in King County (King Twp.York County) 83 years ago, George Brooks came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brooks, [nee Hannah Brown]to Ryde Township Muskoka when he was around the age of 18. At that time the railway stopped at Washago, and all goods had to be carried into the settlement around Housey's Rapids. The Brooks family was engaged in lumbering. While there he married Miss Jane Arthurs, and a few years later they came to Bracebridge. For a few years he worked in the sawmills, and then began carpentering, which trade he continued for over 40 years, until obliged by poor health to give up working. Mrs. Brooks passed away in January 1932. One daughter, Cora (Mrs. Peter McNaughtan) died in 1940, and two daughters, Gertrude and Ethel died in childhood. Surviving are four sons, Robert, of Bracebridge; Ross of Sudbury; Gilbert of Hamilton; and Herman of Bracebridge; and one daughter Hilda (Mrs. Harold Bickmore) of Bracebridge. There are 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The funeral service was at the Marshall Funeral Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, May 24th conducted by Rev. B. A. Sutton, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, which Mr. Brooks had attended. The pall bearers were his four sons, and two grandsons, Flt. Sgt. Don MacNaughtan and Pte. George Brooks. Interment was in the Church of England cemetery."
