  Lillian was a British Home child. Having found her on the 1881 Census for Barnardos The Village Home For Orphan Neglected and Destitute Girls, Barking, Essex. She sailed from Liverpool England aboard the Peruvian on 19 Jul 1884, headed for Ontario, Canada. 1891 Canadian Census she is listed as a domestic servant with the Joseph Gill family in the town of Matchedash, Simcoe East, Ontario. Canadian Census 1901 she is listed as a domestic within the John A Lovering household also in the town of Matchedash, Simcoe East, Ontario. Nov 1904 she married William Charles Bates of Orillia, Simcoe East, Ontario. They had 3 children Lillian Alice Irene Bates, William Charles Bates Jr. and Violet Maryan Bates. Canadian Census 1911 residing in Orillia,Simcoe East, Ontario and 1921 Niagara Falls, Welland, Ontario, Canada both living with her family. At some point her husband leaves her. The family lore is that he left for a loaf of bread and never returned. Or that he returned to England where he was hospitalized from a wound during WWI and fell in love with his nurse. Neither have been confirmed. In 1940 Lily is living in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States with daughter Violet. She retired in 1943 after 47 years as an LPN.
