Dr. M. Barbara Akin, 77, of Hillcrest Avenue, Grove City, died Friday,
Aug. 14, 2009, at her home.
Born Jan. 31, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late
Richard Kirkbride Akin and Margarete Mary McElheran Akin.
She grew up on Chicago's South Side, where she attended Catholic
schools and graduated from the Academy of Our Lady, Longwood High
School, graduating in the spring of 1949.
Following graduation she worked for WBKB Television Station in Chicago
and attended night school at Loyola University's downtown campus. In
May 1955, she left Chicago and went to work with the U.S. Air Force in
Japan until 1957.
Barbara returned to Chicago in 1958 and started working for the Ladies
Home Journal magazine and attended evening school at Northwestern
University. In 1959 she began work at St. Xavier College for the VP of
academic affairs, and she enrolled in college there at that time.
She graduated from St. Xavier College with a bachelor's degree in
history in 1962 and started graduate studies at the University of
Chicago. She was awarded a master's degree in history in 1965. Barbara
began her studies towards her doctorate degree and received her Ph.D.
in American church history from the University of Chicago in December
of 1970.
Barbara became an associate professor of history at Grove City College
in September 1970, and in March 1974, she was received into the
Episcopal Church as a member.
She attended Seabury-Western Theological seminary in Evanston, Ill., f
rom September 1978 to June 1979 and was ordained as a deacon following
seminary.
Barbara was ordained as a priest on Oct. 5, 1985, and was named vicar
of the Church of the Epiphany Episcopal, Grove City. She retired as a
professor of history and chairwoman of the history department at Grove
City College in 1999 and retired as vicar of Epiphany in 2008, after
serving the church for 23 years.
She is survived by two nephews; five nieces; and many friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert
James Akin.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the
Cunningham Funeral Home, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of
The Epiphany Episcopal, 870 Liberty St. Extension, Grove City, with
the Bishop Sean Rowe as celebrant.
Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City.
