      Richard Akin
      Richard Kirkbride Akin, 88, formerly of 1473 E. Berkeley, Springfield, died at 8:12 p.m. Friday in Grove City, Pa., after a short illness. Mr. Akin was born in Muskegon, Mich., on Dec. 16, 1897 to Thomas and Isabele (Berney) Akin. He was married to Margaret McElhern, who preceded him in death in 1981. A longtime resident of Springfield, he was a metallurgical engineer at the Combustion Engineering Corporation before his retirement in 1962. He was an original member in the Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout. He was a director and a player in the American Contract Bridge League. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1924. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 676 in Springfield. He is survived by two children, the Rev. Dr. M. Barbara Akin, Grove City, Pa., and Robert James Akin, Hedgesville, W. Va. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the John C. Door Funeral Home in Grover City with the Rev. Jean Christofferson officiating. Interment will be in a Springfield cemetery.
