JOHN A. RAYBURN
John A. Rayburn, son of James and Maria Lenahan Rayburn, was born in Eau Galle on October 13m 1860. A brother, Thomas, and a sister, Gertrude (Lucas) preceded him in death.
At the age of 17 he began his work for Carson and Rand, lumberman of the northwest who held extensive interests in the Chippewa Valley Lumber Co. when Chippewa Falls had the greatest lumber mills in the world. Winters, he spent driving a four-horse team--an employment held in high esteem by the men of this time. In summer, Mr. Rayburn became a riverman. This was a hazardous labor, riding the logs, keeping them from piling up on the Chippewa River from Eau Claire to Reeds Landing.
John Rayburn and Margaret Werrell were married at St. Mary's, Durand, April 14, 1885. He continued working for Carson and Rand until this company closed its Eau Galle business in 1898. The Rayburns then moved to a farm near the village. In 1919, they came to Durand. Mrs. Rayburn died here in 1944. In November of the same year, Mr. Rayburn suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was an invalid from that time until his death February 5, 1948. After the impressive Catholic funeral service he was buried in St. Mary's cemetery. Very Rev. G.F. Schuh officiated. His grandson named for him (as was his son), was organist. His two older granddaughters assisted in the choir. Beside the J.A. Rayburn family including the four grandchildren, John, a student at Eau Claire teacher's college and Glorieux, Marie and Kathryn of Durand, he is survived by two sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews. One niece, Margaret (Mrs. EL Bauer) made he home with the Rayburns until the time of her marriage.
