  • Genealogical Notes
    • Obit...Udney:
The death of Mrs. Charles Speiran, senior on Wednesday last was very sad, Mrs Speiran was in her usual health, but happened to slip on the ice near the back door, fell on her back, and struck her head with such force as to cause a fatal concussion of the brain. Mrs Speiran was in her seventy-third year. She had a large family, numbering eleven in all -- six sons and five daughters. All live in this vicinity, and all are married. Sincere sympathy is felt for Mr. Speiran and the other members of the family. The funeral, on Friday, was a very large one, particularly considering the stormy weather. The body was interred in the Udney Cemetery. There Rev. D.R. Clarke officiated. Mrs Speiran's six sons were the pallbearers. The Orillia Packet, January 27, 1910

Sarah Carson Moore Speiran, emigrated from Ireland when she was sixteen (1854), the crossing of the Atlantic took six weeks. It is not known whether the rest of her family came at that time. In the January of 1910 she went out for an armload of wood, slipped on the ice and hit her heaad, complained of a violent headache. The doctor was sent for and he said he would give her something to relieve her. She went to sleep and never woke up. Willie John had no schooling and could not read or write except to sign his name, and very much enjoyed having his grandchildren read to him. He believed all his life that his Mother died because she drank a cup of black tea instead of the green tea they always used.
