  • Genealogical Notes

    • Information provided by Brenda Ruttle given to her by the son of Sarah and Tommy, Clarence Harper Ruttle:
Sometime about 1878-1880, Thomas, along with his older brothers, Daniel, Levi and George, all moved from near Warburton, Ontario to the Lake Simcoe area of Ontario. They held land in Mara Township, Ontario County., near the village of Brechin. Other friends and family from Leeds County settled nearby. Their two surviving sisters and their three brothers remained in Leeds County. Henry and John had already established their own farms and Hiram, the youngest brother intended to take over their father's farm.
In late 1880 or early 1881, the brothers in Brechin received word that Hiram was suffering from Asthma and that he had been advised to move west in an attempt to ease his suffering. The brothers decided that Thomas, the next youngest son, would return to Warburton and take over the family farm.

Brothers Daniel, Levi and George eventurally left the Brechin area. Daniel and Levi joined Hiram in western Canada although Levi returned to Ontario. He eventually settled near George who had moved on to Bruce County near Kincardine.

Born on the family homestead, Lot 17, Con V. Leeds Twp., Leeds Co., Ontario near the hamlet of Warburton, Ontario. 8th child of George Ruttle and Mary Larabee

Thomas was originally buried in the Ruttle Family Cemetery located on a corner of the family homestead near Warburton. Thomas's parents, a sister and two brothers, a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews were also buried there. After Sarah's death, Thomas' children had his body exhumed and transferred to Union Cemetery.
