    • from the Toronto Star Jan. 31, 1996-- Rev. James Joseph Hayes flying priest loved country -- Rev. James Joseph ( J.J.) Hayes always wanted to be a priest and loved living in the country. He combined the two during a 53 year career. He was also able to indulge one of his greatest pleasures- flying. Father Hayes died of leukemia Monday in University Hospital, London Ont. He was 77. Born in Orillia, he grew up on his parents' nearby farm (Rama Twp) until the family moved to Toronto's east end when he was 10. After leaving high school, he worked for two years as a clerk at a book publishing company, but found out he really wanted to be priest, his sister Leonore Moore said. After training at St. Augustine's seminary, he was ordained in 1943 at St. Michael's Cathedral. He volunteered to go out west on missions and love the 3 years he spent in places such as Nelson, B.C.- on return to Toronto, he served at St. Ann's- and while there was chaplain of the Toronto Don Jail, other Toronto parishes included Blessed Sacrament & St. Vincent de Paul. In 1957 he was pastor of St. John's Newmarket, and later served in parishes in Barrie, Brechin (1971-1982) & Port McNichol.
