Uptergrove Social Evening, A Delightful Success
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A delightful euchre and box social was held Monday evening, October 29th, in the basement of St. Columbkill's church, Uptergrove. Rev. P. J. Flannagan and his assisstant Father McKenna were present until the close of the evening's entertainment, and the program was conducted in a very efficient and orderly manner. A crowd of over 300 enjoyed the pleasant program provided.
Over sixty couples sat down to euchre. Five ladies tied losing only one game, and Miss Aileen Duffy, Udney and Mrs. Vince O'Connell, Atherley won the first and second ladie's prizes. Four gentlemen tied with six wins out of seven games. Patrick Duffy, Jr., won first and Whitney Doyle second prize. Those who had not won a game came forward, and Miss Veronica Egan was the lucky winner, while Pat Manning was the sole male who did not win a game, and was loudly applauded as he received his prize fiddle.
Beautiful Boxes Auctioned
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Joe Fox may have retired from active work in the auctioneering business, but he was persuaded by Father Flannagan to come back, and make the young gallants pay up to retain their girl's boxes. John Edward Clarke opened the bidding and bought the first box. Leonard Egan and Jack Callahan both had their girl's boxes bid up on them. Pat Clarke bid on a beautiful big box, decorated with roses and got without opposition. Whitney Doyle caused laughter when he bid .75c cents on a box he didn't want and Joe Fox made him take it. Joseph Egan was a gallant bidder and bought five boxes during the evening. At lunch time he was noticed with his beautiful harem around him having a glorious time. Danny Ferguson just had to have supper with his girl and it cost him $3.00 before the boys stopped bidding, this being the highest price of the evening. George Curran was the successful bidder on a beautiful star box, decorated with black cats on a yellow background. Auctioneer Fox fell off the platform trying to sell a big box to Jack Duffy, and ended the sale by selling his wife's box to Jack Mugan. A splendid sum was realised from the sale of the boxes, all of which were a credit to the girls and ladies who so tastefully decorated and donated them.
Young People Dance
---------------------------------------------
Lee's orchestra furnished splendid music for dancing, and the younger set enjoyed themselves until 2:30 when the evening's entertainment closed, and all present went home in a happy frame of mind, well satisfied with the evening's splendid entertainment.
