Richard Dissette
Friends in Orillia and Mara were shocked to hear on Tuesday that Richard Dissette had died in Toronto at the home of his son, Edward Dissette, on Monday. Mr. Dissette had not been in very good health but he felt better for his stay at his summer home at Point Champlain and had looked forward to spending the winter in the south or in California. Mr. Dissette was born seventy-six years ago in the Township of West Gwillimbury, and was the fifth son of John Dissette and Bridget O'Donnell, an aunt of the late Richard O'Donnell, at one time Supervisor of bridges on this division of the G.T.R. About 1866 he came to Orillia to learn the saddling trade to Mr. Christopher's Moore's harness shop. In 1869, he and the late Robert Hoy, who was then in the same shop, bought out Mr. Moore. About six years later Mr. Dissette went to Toronto where he bought a few lots in Parkdale and erected houses. He later bought Crosby Hall, an hotel not far from the railway station. From there he moved to the Empress Hotel on Yonge-street which he managed till only recently. About 1880 he married Alice Clarke, daughter of John Clarke, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Edward, who is married in Toronto, and James, who lives at home. One son, Arthur, was killed overseas, and another son, Frank, died soon after his return from the Front. There are two grandchildren, a son and daughter of Edward. One sister, Miss Mary Dissette, who resides with her neice, Mrs. John Duffy, of Uptergrove, and two brothers, Edward of Toronto and John, of Detroit, also survive. Another sister, Ann, Mrs. James Mahoney, died at Uptergrove last summer. Mrs. O'Donnell and Mrs. Dan Leonard, of Atherley; Mrs. Doherty, of Midland, and Mrs. Neil O'Connell, of Atherley, daughters of the late George Boulton, were cousins of the deceased. The late Mrs. George Boulton and the late Mrs. William Boulton, sisters, were aunts of Mr. Dissette. Brother Rogation, a son of the late William Boulton, is a cousin of the deceased. Last week, Brother Rogation visited relatives in Mara on his way to a field near Lake Superior.
For some years Mr. Dissette, has spent his summers at his residence on Point Champlain.
