      "informal ceremony"--not religious

      Stanley Republican, September 18, 1897
The people of Stanley were somewhat surprised Monday morning by the somewhat sensational report that Jas. Grogan and Miss Bertha Cummings, both of this place, were married at Thorp on Sunday evening. The bridal couple are highly respected young people of our town who have been keeping company for some time in spite of parental protest. But as is usual in such cases, Cupid won the day. The young people drove to Thorp Sunday evening and were quietly married by Rev. Meacham. The Republican together with their many friends unite in extending best wishes of a long, prosperous life.
