Another of the early settlers of North
Mara, died lately, Mr. Patrick Clarke, at
the age of ninety years. He came to
Mara from Newmarket in the year 1840.
He was a very industrious and steady
person and all that could be wished for
as a neighbor. He was a school trustee
for more than thirty years, and was one
of the first trustees of North Mara, and
kept the position until his age caused
him to resign. He was also township
councillor for years and gave it up of his
own accord. He rendered much help to
other early settlers that came to Mara
after he did, by providing them with
seed, grain, and other necessaries,
whether they had money or not. Through
the difficulty of early settlement, it
would in some cases be six or seven
years before he would get his pay, how-
ever he got it all right. He went last
winter and spring and recorded his vote
for the Reform cause, although he was
partly blind and so weak that he had to
be carried from the sleigh to the place of
voting. He was also one of that victori-
ous Reform company that went from
Thorah and Mara to Barrie, to vote for
the Reform candidate, Captain Steele, of
Medonte, who was elected on that
occasion, in the winter of 1841 or '42.
He remembered the time when labouring
men in Ireland, would get only four-
pence a day and board themselves. He
leaves behind quite a number of boys
and girls, and gave his boys 100 acres of
land each.
