    • One of the most shocking events on the Great Lakes was the loss of the steamer Asia in a hurricane on September 14, 1882. It was late fall and the ship was overloaded with passengers, horses, and other supplies. Only two of the over 120 passengers survived: Dunkan Tinkiss and Christy Anne Morrison. They drifted for days before reaching land.
Following the storm, search parties were mobilized to retrieve the bodies. One such crew landed at the lighthouse on Lonely Island. After an investigation, the lightkeeper was accused of robbing the dead.
The loss of the Asia in 1882 so enraged the public the Canadian government was compelled to build a new series of lighthouses to improve shipping safety.
