The response of a relatively untrained and unmilitary people was spectacular. Two months after the outbreak of war, an unprecedented armada of 32 transports, escorted by 10 British warships, was convoying 33,000 soldiers from Canada to Britain; and within another four months a complete infantry division of Canadian troops was in action in France, Canada’s total contribution was ultimately to exceed 550,000 or over six times Wellington’s entire army at Waterloo.

During the Great War, the community support in Rama & Mara was tremendous- local groups in places like Cooper’s Falls, Longford Mills, Atherley, Uptergrove, Udney, Sebright, and Brechin, regularly sent parcels to those from their area. (see the article entitled ‘DISPLAY OF CHRISTMAS BOXES- WW1 EFFORT’ in the Veterans Section)

Here are two examples of the many letters of thanks and gratitude, these groups received from the Soldiers.

Most were born, and remained in these townships, some were born in the townships, and relocated elsewhere prior to the war, others were born elsewhere, and settled in the townships prior to the Great War.

FALLEN SOLDIERS ARE ON A HONOUR ROLL ENTITLED ‘THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE’

we invite you to submit photos and/or stories on these soldieirs, when did they go overseas, when did they return, were they wounded, were they prisioners of war, did they recieve medals or mentioned in dispatches–what was their rank? Share your stories– lest we forget
